C.O.Bigelow

bigelowC.O.Bigelow is the beauty products landmark in NYC, if you will. It’s the oldest apothecary-pharmacy in the U.S. Founded in 1838, this West Village institution has unparalleled selection of hard-to-find cosmetics and homeopathic remedies. Besides the international skincare lines,  Bigelow’s has its own brand of affordable, smartly-packaged soaps and many made from historic recipes. My friend in Paris can’t live without their mint body scrub but doesn’t really suggest the day face cream which has a scrub effect ! RB

Dumbo Brooklyn Flea

brooklynflea

Brooklyn Bridge Flea takes place under the  beautiful bridge with gorgeous views of the Manhattan skyline and the bridge overhead but can’t avoid the noise coming from the Brooklyn and the Manhattan Bridge and that’s bad news. You’ll find many of the same vendors as in Fort Greene Flea. Check it out you always find a treasure : great Gucci vintage bags, Elma Blint‘s fresh, creative and elegant jewlery, rare outfits and many others things. Don’t miss the chocolate at Jacques Torres. Brooklyn Bridge Flea is open from 11am to 6pm every Sunday. RB

This week, with Krauetler, their new partner, Hasted Hunt‘s gallery opened a new space right on 24th between 10 and 11th whereas the one on 20th is situated on the 2d floor.

The gallery represents a bunch of really cool photographers as Mark Cohen, Aaron Siskind, Erwin Olaf and Joel Witkin. For their first show, they are holding the beautiful Edward Burtinsky’s exhibition about oil. His pictures are like paintings.

Joel Meyerowitz’s parks – Green Itinerary

High Rock Park, spring

Last night, the opening of Joel Meyerowitz’s Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks was held at the great upper East Side Museum of the City of New York.NYC is incredibly green. The city has 29 000 acres of parks and green spaces.

Meyerowitz was there, hanging out with people dressed up and had a hug with Mary Ellen Mark ! Needless to say that the work is amazing.  I didn’t know that  he is the first photographer to document New York City’s parks since the 1930s, when they were photographed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s WPA program. That makes the work even more powerful.

A book published by Aperture can be use as a start to organise a green itinerary in NYC during week-ends.
